This Tuesday Liverpool did what was necessary. They got an important 2-0 win vs Burnley at Turf Moor that allowed them to become the new leaders of the Premier League standings with 42 points, taking advantage of the fact that Aston Villa lost against Manchester United and Arsenal (who have 40) will play on Thursday against West Ham United.

Things went well for The Reds, as 6 minutes into the first half Darwin Nunez netted the opener with a shot from outside the box, after an assist from Cody Gakpo. That advantage allowed them to control the ball and the pace of the match, until in the second half, when they were already in stoppage time, Diogo Joto doubled the lead and secured the victory.

However, things could have been even better for them, but there were two goals denied by VAR. The most debatable of them came from Harvey Elliott, who scored during the second half with a good shot inside the box that made the reaction of the rival goalkeeper impossible. However, the official in charge of the VAR, Simon Hooper, indicated to referee Paul Tierney that he should review the goal for a possible passive offside by Mohamed Salah. Tierney did so and decided to rule it out.

While this did not hurt Liverpool, as they still won the game, manager Jurgen Klopp showed his dissatisfaction during the press conference: “They will tell us again it’s an offside situation or whatever. It’s insane honestly. This man, if he never played football then it can happen. You think ‘offside rule, let me see, page seven, there’s somebody between him and the goalie’, that’s ridiculous. We all need referees but we need them with the right interpretation of the rules. How can you make this situation not a goal? That’s a clear goal.”

Now they need The Hammers' help

Liverpool are, for now, the Premier League leaders. But to stay on top of the standings they will need some help from West Ham United. This Thursday they will visit the Emirates Stadium and, if they get at least a draw against Arsenal, the Reds will definitely be the leaders of the tournament.
