Undoubtedly one of the most interesting matches of the weekend in Europe is this Saturday's match between Newcastle and Manchester United at St. James' Park. The Magpies are in seventh place in the Premier League standings, in the Conference League qualification zone, while the Red Devils have one point more and are currently earning a place in the UEFA Europa League.

Both teams are aiming for a victory that will allow them to improve their position and get closer to the leaders Arsenal, as well as to the teams that are in the Champions League 2024/25 qualification zone. But it will not be an easy mission, as they have proven to have even strengths and top level players.

That parity between the two teams was clear during the first half. Newcastle had more time on the ball and created a few more dangerous situations than their rivals, but lacked accuracy in front of goalkeeper André Onana. The most dangerous chance was a free kick by Kieran Trippier, which hit the crossbar. The Red Devils also had some chances, especially a shot by Alejandro Garnacho that was saved by goalkeeper Nick Pope.

However, the most important situation of the first half was an absurd play by Diogo Dalot. The Portuguese full-back was in his own box defending when he tried to clear the ball, but it hit him badly and bounced off his arm. Instantly the Newcastle fans claimed it had been handball and therefore a penalty should have been given. But referee Robert Jones and the VAR had no such opinion.

Surely Erik Ten Hag is not satisfied with his team's performance during the first half. That's why he might make changes after the break.
