Last week fans around the world were shocked by the illegal betting scandal involving several Italian players. Juventus' Nicolo Fagioli, Aston Villa's Nicolo Zaniolo and Newcastle's Sandro Tonali are among them. As investigations by Italian prosecutors continue, these three stars will have to face the consequences of their actions.
Reports indicate that Tonali could receive a 10-month suspension and a fine of almost $15,000, in addition to being obliged to undergo therapeutic treatment with specialists to recover from his gambling addiction and having to give lectures at schools and amateur sports associations on the dangers of gambling.
If this is confirmed, Newcastle will lose one of their most important players. That is why coach Eddie Howe and the club's chiefs are starting to look for a replacement for him. And it seems he has a favorite: Scott McTominay.
The Scottish midfielder came close to leaving Manchester United last summer, but finally stayed at Old Trafford. And the decision proved to be the right one, as he gradually earned a place in the team thanks to good performances and important goals, and today he is a key player for coach Erik Ten Hag. According to The Athletic, Howe believes he would be an ideal replacement for Tonali, as he has the characteristics the team needs.
If Scott McTominay decides to stay at Manchester United, Newcastle will look for another alternative also in the Premier League. According to The Sun, Eddie Howe's plan B is Joao Palinha, the Portuguese midfielder who in the 2023/24 season has played 9 games and scored one goal for Fulham. But negotiations will not be easy, as Bayern Munich are also interested in him and could make an offer in the January transfer window.
