Manchester United have had some serious problems lately. Not only have they suffered off-field conflicts, such as the quarrel between Jadon Sancho and Erik Ten Hag or the alleged fights between players after the defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion. They have also received harsh criticism from fans and the press for their poor performances on the pitch.
In Premier League they are having the worst start since 1987, with five wins and five defeats in their first ten games. As a result, they are in 8th place in the standings, far behind leaders Tottenham and out of the qualification zone for international tournaments. And in the Champions League they lost two of the three matches they played in group A.
With this scenario, the Red Devils know that the Carabao Cup could be one of their few chances to win a title this season. That is why they will do everything they can to beat Newcastle at Old Trafford on Wednesday and advance to the quarterfinals. Interestingly, there will be a repeat of last season's tournament final, in which Ten Hag's team won 2-0.
This time the coach decided that most of the stars will be part of the team. The starting lineup will be: André Onana; Diogo Dalot, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Sergio Reguilon; Hannibal Mejbri, Casemiro; Antony, Mason Mount, Alejandro Garnacho; Anthony Martial.
Newcastle, unlike Manchester United, are satisfied with what they are doing this season. In the Premier League they are in sixth place in the standings with 17 points, in the UEFA Europa League qualification zone. And in the Champions League they are competing with PSG, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan in Group F, the toughest group of the tournament. For Wednesday's match, coach Eddie Howe chose this XI: Martin Dubravka; Valentino Livramento, Emil Krafth, Paul Dummett, Matt Targett, Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff, Joelinton, Lewis Hall, Matt Ritchie; Anthony Gordon.
