This week the media and social networks were flooded with news about Paul Pogba. He tested positive in an anti-doping test conducted after the first match of the 2023/24 Serie A season, in which Juventus beat Udinese 3-0. The midfielder did not even play a minute in that match, but was on the bench and then had to take the test.

The results found "testosterone metabolites of non-endogenous origin". Testosterone is a banned substance as it has potentially performance-enhancing effects on athletes. This means that its use leads to greater strength, endurance and speed. That is why its use in soccer is punishable and, in cases like this one, the penalties can be up to two years, if the use was accidental, or four years, if intent is proven.

Now several Italian media have published information about Pogba's explanation for this. Apparently, the player bought a dietary supplement on the recommendation of a "doctor friend" in the United States, where doping rules are different than in Europe. If this is proven, he could claim a mistake and, therefore, avoid the more serious sanction of intent. His agent, Rafaela Pimenta, had assured: "We are waiting for the counter analysis and until then we can't say anything. The certain thing is that Paul Pogba never wanted to break the rules."

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, this Tuesday the midfielder informed Juventus about this situation, so the club's medical team did not know about it and that is why they could not prevent the consequences.

What will happen?

In the next few days the results of the second test will be available. In case of a positive result again, Pogba will be in serious trouble and could be out of official matches for a long time. In the meantime, he has been provisionally suspended and Juventus issued a statement saying they accept the suspension and reserve "the right to consider the next procedural steps".
