Finally the news that has been brewing for weeks was confirmed. David De Gea will not continue at Manchester United for the 2023/24 season, in which the English team will play in the Premier League and return to the Champions League.
In this way, he ends a 12-year cycle with the Red Devils. He arrived there in 2011 from Atlético Madrid when he was only 20 years old. Throughout his career in England he played 545 games and won 7 titles, including the Premier League 2012/13.
The decision was communicated by the player himself through a publication on his Instagram account. In it he said: "I would like to express my unwavering gratitude and appreciation for the love from the last 12 years. We've achieved a lot since my dear Sir Alex Ferguson brought me to this club. It's been an unforgettable and successful period since I came here. I didn't think from leaving Madrid as a young boy we would achieve what we did together.
Regarding his future, the goalkeeper did not give details, but said: "Now, it's the right time to undertake a new challenge, to push myself again in new surroundings". According to The Sun, the club that could sign him is Al-Nassr of the Saudi Arabian Pro League. If that happens, he will be a teammate of Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo Brozovic.
With De Gea's departure confirmed, Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has called for a new goalkeeper. Although other possibilities have been mentioned, such as Aston Villa's Argentine Emiliano Martinez, the target is Andre Onana. The Inter player had a great 2022/23 season and could arrive in England for $50 million.
