Barcelona has reached an agreement with Ilkay Gündogan to secure his signing for the next two years, with the option to extend his contract until 2026. According to sources close to the club, the German midfielder will receive a salary of 10 million EUR per season. The operation is expected to be made official this Thursday, although the contract includes a special clause at the player's request.
According to the newspaper SPORT, the clause stipulates that if Barcelona fails to register Gündogan before the start of LaLiga (scheduled for Friday, August 11), the player from Gelsenkirchen will be able to terminate his contract and sign with another club. This clause guarantees the player's security in case financial complications arise that hinder his registration with the Catalan team.
Last summer, Barcelona had to wait until the third matchday of LaLiga to register Jules Koundé. Other players, like Marcos Alonso and Héctor Bellerín, had to wait until the end of the transfer window to sign, as confirmation of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's departure was needed to comply with financial restrictions of the Fair Play.
In this regard, Gündogan has made it clear to Barcelona's board that he does not expect a prolonged wait for the club to finalize his signing. The board is confident in freeing up enough salary cap space before July 1 to ensure his registration, although if player departures become more complicated than anticipated, the deadlines could be extended.
However, the arrival of the German midfielder is being managed with enough time to adjust the financial figures of the Blaugrana club. Barcelona is diligently working to meet registration requirements and secure Gündogan's presence in the team before the start of LaLiga.
