The future of Sergiño Dest remains uncertain. The player is scheduled to return to FC Barcelona on July 1st, but he doesn't seem to be in Xavi Hernández's plans. Therefore, the club is still hoping to finalize his departure in the coming weeks and is keeping an eye on the Bundesliga, where Union Berlin has shown interest in the full-back for some time.
Dest, who was on loan at AC Milan and had limited involvement with only 14 appearances in the current season, is going through a tough time. He hasn't played any minutes since January due to a lack of competitive rhythm and muscle issues.
Despite his current situation, Dest remains attractive to several clubs due to his versatility as both a right-back and left-back. According to reports from Calciomercato, Union Berlin continues to be interested in the American player as they plan to strengthen their squad for the upcoming edition of the UEFA Champions League.
The negotiation for Dest's departure is still pending, as Barcelona would prefer an outright sale to improve their financial situation, while Union Berlin would be seeking a loan until June 2024 due to the player's underwhelming performance in Italy.
Sergiño Dest doesn't fit into Xavi Hernández's project at Barcelona. Although Dest has a contract with the club until 2025, the coaching staff doesn't count on him even with the team's need for a right-back. With a loan in progress, Barcelona could try to include a mandatory purchase option to secure at least 15 million EUR in a future sale.
