Mateo Kovacic's future appears to be sealed, with his destination pointing towards Manchester City in this summer's transfer market. The Croatian midfielder, who is still a Chelsea player, hinted at his imminent change of scenery upon arriving at the national team's camp, stating, "Everything indicates that after five years, I will change the environment, but we'll see what happens."
According to ESPN reports, negotiations between both clubs have progressed positively, and it is expected that the agreement for Kovacic will be finalized within the next 15 days. Manchester City is expected to secure the 29-year-old player's transfer after Chelsea valued him at around 40 million EUR.
Following their recent Champions League triumph, Manchester City aims to further consolidate their position as favorites in that competition and the domestic league with the addition of Kovacic, along with defender Josko Gvardiol, who is also on the club's radar.
Gvardiol, Kovacic's national team companion and current RB Leipzig player, has garnered interest from several top-level European clubs, including City, Chelsea, and Liverpool. It is estimated that the German club will request around 80 million EUR to approve his transfer.
The Blues would recoup a significant portion of the 45 million EUR they paid to Real Madrid in 2019 for the services of the Croatian midfielder, who still has one year remaining on his contract until June 2024.
