Young Liverpool right-back Calvin Ramsay will join Championship team Preston North End on loan for the upcoming season. This decision has been made by manager Jurgen Klopp, who believes that a loan spell will be beneficial for the player's development.
Nineteen-year-old Calvin Ramsay arrived at Liverpool last summer from Aberdeen in a transfer worth 4.2 million EUR. However, due to a series of injuries, the Scottish international was only able to make two appearances for Klopp's team in his first season at Anfield.
Liverpool's manager has opted to loan Ramsay out in order to ensure that the young full-back can enjoy regular minutes in the first team and continue his development. Klopp still considers Ramsay as part of the club's long-term plans, and it is expected that he will return to Liverpool in the summer of 2024 with more playing opportunities.
With Ramsay's departure, Liverpool is left with Trent Alexander-Arnold as the only natural right-back in their squad, which could lead the club to seek reinforcements in that position during the summer transfer window.
Although Joe Gomez can also play in that role, Klopp has used Alexander-Arnold as a midfielder on certain occasions. Therefore, the arrival of a full-back with similar characteristics could be considered to provide greater depth to the team and support the English international.
