In the summer of 2022 Manchester City paid more than $50 million to sign Kalvin Phillips. He had shown excellent performances at Leeds United, first in Championship and then in Premier League, which had allowed him to reach the England National Team. That is why Pep Guardiola was interested in adding him to the squad, believing he could be a good complement to Rodri in midfield.

But things did not work out as expected. Kalvin had some injuries that prevented him from playing and, when he was recovered, his level was not good enough to earn a place in the team. The result was that he barely had any participation during the 2022/23 season and in the first half of the current season. With this scenario, the midfielder's intention seems to be to leave for another club.

It is then that Barcelona appears. Coach Xavi Hernandez has on more than one occasion asked the club's chiefs to sign a holding midfielder, especially after Gavi's serious injury, and Phillips could be an ideal option. The problem is that the Catalan side have serious problems with financial fair-play and, in order to add Kalvin, they will need a little help.

According to Mundo Deportivo, there are two conditions necessary for the signing to become a reality. Firstly, Manchester City must agree to loan him out without demanding too much in return, considering that Los Blaugranas do not have much money to spend. And also, the player must give up an important part of his salary so that Barcelona can register him in La Liga without violating the rules of financial fair-play. Something similar was done last summer by Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo.

He needs to play

Kalvin Phillips doesn't just want to leave Manchester City because he is dissatisfied with how little involvement he has had in the last year and a half. One of the main reasons he needs to find a new club right now is because next summer's Euro 2024 will be played in Germany. He is a regular member of the England squad, but he could lose his place in coach Gareth Southgate's consideration if he does not play more often.
