Liverpool have a mission at Anfield Road on Monday: beat Newcastle and move three points clear of Aston Villa in the Premier League standings. The Villans beat Burnley on Saturday to go top with 42 points, but the Reds have the chance to overtake them again. In addition, Manchester City are also very close: they have 40 points and one game in hand.
During the last weeks, the teams that became leaders of the English league could not stay there for long. That happened with Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester City and Aston Villa. That is why it is very important for Jurgen Klopp's team to get a victory and show that they are ready to compete for the title.
In the first half, Liverpool were superior to their rivals and created several chances to score the opener, but lacked accuracy. For example, Trent Alexander-Arnold crashed a shot against the post that would have been the most beautiful goal of the week. But without a doubt, the most important chance came from Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian winger took a penalty after 21 minutes, but goalkeeper Martin Dubravka guessed right and saved it with a great reaction.
The missed penalty not only prevented The Reds from scoring the opener, but also put 'Mo' in a sad situation. He is now at the top of the ranking of players who have missed the most penalties in Premier League history (5). With the same amount are also Wayne Rooney, Jermaine Defoe and Riyad Mahrez.
Jurgen Klopp must decide during the break whether to ratify the confidence to the same eleven players who were on the field during the first half, or if he makes changes to try to improve things. Liverpool's substitutes are Caoimhin Kelleher, Jarell Quansah, Conor Bradley, Alexis MacAllister, Ryan Gravenberch, Harvey Elliott, James McConnell, Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo.
