For a decade now Manchester United have been losing their place of privilege in England. During the almost 30 years that Sir Alex Ferguson was the coach, they were the most important team in the country and were favorites to win all the tournaments in which they competed. However, since the departure of the Scottish manager in 2013, things have gone wrong for them.

Several coaches were hired to replace him, including David Moyes, Louis Van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik Ten Hag, but none of them lived up to expectations. In fact, The Red Devils have not won the Premier League title since 2013 and the Champions League since 2008.

One of the reasons for those failures is poor player selection. They have spent a lot of money on signing players who came in as stars, but most of them failed. This caused not only loss of money, but also problems in the squad. According to The Sun, during the last decade the English side bought 13 players for £50 million or more (about $63 million), reaching a total of $1.1 billion.

Of those, the only ones who have shown convincing performances have been Bruno Fernandes (they paid $86 million for him in 2020) and Lisandro Martinez (he cost $72 million last year). Many have left after disappointing fans, such as Paul Pogba ($113 million), Romelu Lukaku ($100 million), Jadon Sancho ($90 million), Angel Di Maria ($72 million) and Fred ($66 million), while others are still at the club, waiting for another chance to show their talent.

Who are they?

The players who still have time to improve are Antony ($108 million), Harry Maguire ($100 million), Rasmus Hojlund ($81 million), Casemiro ($76 million), Mason Mount ($70 million) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka ($63 million). However, this semester may be their last chance, considering that new owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe recently arrived to take charge of soccer-related decisions and intends to change a lot of things.
