The first semifinal of the Spanish Super Cup was played this Wednesday. At the Al Awal Park stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid faced each other. Los Merengues qualified for this tournament as the last champions of the Copa del Rey, while Los Colchoneros were third in the standings of La Liga 2022/23.
The high level of both teams, the historical rivalry between them and the fact that it was a decisive phase of a tournament, made this match a very attractive spectacle for fans around the world. And they did not disappoint those expectations, as they played with great intensity and demonstrated their desire for victory at all times.
Mario Hermoso netted the first goal for Los Colchoneros in the first minutes of the match, but Los Merengues quickly reacted and got the comeback through Antonio Rudiger and Ferland Mendy. Until that moment, all the goals of the match had been scored by defenders, until Antoine Griezmann made a genius and bagged the leveller before the break.
In the second half Atlético Madrid again took the lead thanks to a mistake by Kepa Arrizabalaga that ended with an own goal by Rudiger, but the joy was short-lived for them. Moments later Dani Carvajal captured a rebound inside the box and scored the 3-3 that took the match to extra time.
In the first extra time neither team could make the difference and it seemed that both were satisfied with going to penalty shoot-outs. However, everything changed after the break. There Real Madrid scored the fourth goal thanks to a Dani Carvajal cross that Joselu connected with a header and then bounced into Savic, preventing goalkeeper Oblak to save it. And in the last minute Brahim Diaz, with an empty net, completed the comeback.
