In 2023 Inter Miami became one of the most popular teams in the world thanks to the arrival of Lionel Messi. Up to that point, they were the weakest team in Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference, but that quickly changed. In just one month they were champions of the Leagues Cup, while millions of fans from all continents began to watch every one of their matches. This allowed them to increase the audience levels of match broadcasts, as well as the sale of tickets and jerseys.
But this year the demands will be much greater. The Herons will compete in MLS and the Leagues Cup, just like in 2023, but also in the CONCACAF Champions League. This is the most important tournament in North and Central America, and awards a spot in the Club World Cup.
Now the fans will want to see them competing for all those titles and that is why the club's chiefs are working to raise the level of the team. The first signing they announced was Luis Suarez, one of Lionel Messi's best friends and a former Liverpool, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid star, who became a free agent after his contract with Gremio of Brazil expired.
The Herons agreed this week to bring in Julian Gressel, a 30-year-old German midfielder whom coach Gerardo Martino knows from having coached him at Atlanta United. There they were MLS champions in 2018, and the player won his second title in 2023 with Columbus Crew. In addition, Suarez and Gressel are joined by young SuperDraft selections Yannick Bright, Ryan Carmichael, Leo Afonso and Pep Casas. And there are rumors about the arrival of other European stars, such as Sergi Roberto, Ivan Rakitic and David De Gea.
Inter Miami have not only signed players, but also let others go. Kamal Miller was sold to Portland Timbers for $625,000, while Dixon Arroyo, Victor Ulloa, Jake LaCava and Josef Martinez all left.
