Most of the EUROS group stages are over, and the knockout stages are starting to form shape. Kylian Mbappé and the French national team just played their final group stage match of the EUROS after drawing 1-1 against Poland. Although they made it to the knockout stages, France finished second in Group D after their draw, which led to them finishing the group stage with five points. Austria, the surprise to many, topped the group after beating the Netherlands 3-2 and finishing the group with six points. The Netherlands finished third with four points, and it is likely to advance to the knockout stage. Because France finished in second, they are now on the most difficult side of the bracket as the other teams on that side include Spain, Germany, and Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal. Portugal and France could face each other in the quarterfinals if the two teams defeat their opponents in the Round of 16. France and Portugal still don't know who they will play against in the Round of 16.

Mbappé and Ronaldo have faced each other in the past at the EUROS. In the 2020 EUROS, France and Portugal played against each other in the group stage. Both were in Group F, and the game ended 2-2. Ronaldo scored a brace, and both goals came from the penalty spot. Mbappé did not score for France, and instead, it was a brace from Karim Benzema.

It will be even more difficult for Ronaldo or Mbappé after the potential France vs. Portugal quarterfinals in the EUROS this year. They could face either Germany or Spain in the semifinals if they get to that stage. Spain and Germany are arguably the strongest national teams in the EUROS this summer so far due to their performances int he group stage.

Portugal won two out of two games in the EUROS so far after beating the Czech Republic 2-1 and beating Turkiye 3-0.
