La Liga is reaching its decisive stage and Spanish clubs are giving their best to achieve the goals they set at the beginning of the season. The competition for the title seems to be between two teams: Real Madrid and Girona. The latter are the big surprise of European soccer this year, as they have come a long way and competed with other Spanish giants despite having a much smaller budget.

Controversial referee decisions that caused Real Madrid and Rayo Vallecano's ire

However, Los Merengues' victory against Los Tozudos last weekend had made the gap between the two teams even wider. At the start of matchday 25, Carlo Ancelotti's team had a 5-point lead and could extend it this Sunday if they could get a win against Rayo Vallecano. This was key considering that Girona will have a difficult match on Monday against Athletic Bilbao.

But things were far from easy for Real Madrid, who went into the break tied 1-1, despite having started winning thanks to Joselu's goal three minutes into the first half. The hosts reacted after that and netted the leveller from the spot, after the VAR indicated to the referee a handball by Eduardo Camavinga inside the box. Raul de Tomas took the kick and beat the resistance of goalkeeper Andriy Lunin.

After the break things did not change. The hosts kept their concentration and tactical discipline and that was enough to neutralize the virtues of their rivals. Coach Ancelotti tried to improve the team's performance by sending Rodrygo Goes, Arda Guler and Toni Kroos to the field, but that was not enough to get the victory.

During stoppage time, Daniel Carvajal was sent off for an unnecessary blow against a Rayo Vallecano player and will not be able to play the next La Liga match against Sevilla, precisely at a time when Real Madrid have many problems in defense due to the large number of injured players, such as Eder Militao, David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger.
