When Lionel Messi arrived at Paris Saint-Germain in 2021 French fans were very pleased and hopeful. They dreamed that Leo, along with Kylian Mbappé and Neymar, was going to lead the team to the Champions League title for the first time in their history. But that didn't happen. They failed in the round of 16 twice in a row and things ended badly.
For the first time in his professional career, the Argentine forward was whistled at and insulted by the fans of his own club, something that would have been impossible in Barcelona. This situation made him uncomfortable, and his life and that of his family was not entirely happy in Paris. So, when his contract expired there, he decided to go to Inter Miami to play in a less demanding league.
Since then, he has claimed in different interviews that he was not happy during the two years he was at PSG. And that, evidently, has upset the owner. This week Nasser Al-Khelaifi gave an interview to Rothen s'enflamme and spoke about this: "Messi is the best player in history. I have great respect for him. However, I don't accept that they speak badly of Paris Saint-Germain. He's not a bad guy, but I didn't like that. I will say that it's not just for him, but for everyone. We talk when we are here, not when we are not."
Another of Leo's complaints was that he had been the only one of the 26 Argentine players who were World Cup winners at Qatar 2022 not to be honored by his club. On this, Al-Khelaifi explained, "We didn't celebrate Messi because he won the World Cup against France and he won it against Kylian, and because we are also a French club, so we didn't celebrate him so the fans wouldn't whistle him."
During the two years Messi was at PSG, the squad had three aces: besides Leo, Kylian Mbappé and Neymar Jr. This didn't work and that's why this season the club changed the strategy. They let go of the Argentine player and the Brazilian, and made 'Kiki' the undisputed star of the team. In this way they will try to win the Champions League title for the first time.
