The last few months have been a nightmare for Neymar Junior. Last summer he was rejected by Paris Saint-Germain just a few days before the start of the 2023/24 Ligue 1 season. The club's chiefs were fed up with his injuries and poor performances and decided to exclude him from the squad until an offer for him arrives.

Finally Al-Hilal of Saudi Arabia showed up, willing to pay almost $100 million to the French side and offer the forward a salary of almost $150 million per year. However, things did not go well for him there. He arrived at his new club with a muscle injury that kept him out of the first few Pro League games. He then recovered and for a few weeks was part of the team, until he traveled to South America to join the Brazil national team for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

There he suffered a serious knee injury in a match against Uruguay in Montevideo in October, for which he had to undergo surgery. Since then he has been undergoing the recovery process, with the aim of returning to the field as soon as possible. Now, however, he has received terrible news.

Al-Hilal took the decision to delete him from the list of players registered in the Pro League for this season, so even if he recovers in time to play some matches before the end of the tournament, he will not be able to do so. The reason for this decision is that the Saudi side signed Renan Lodi, a Brazilian defender who arrived from Olympique Marseille, and in order to register him they had to remove a foreign player from the squad. As Ney is injured, they chose him.

When will he be back?

Neymar Junior's knee operation was in October last year. Usually, anterior cruciate ligament injuries usually require a recovery time of at least six months, which in some cases can extend up to a year. That means that in the best-case scenario he will be fit to play in April. However, the prognoses are not so optimistic and so it is almost certain that he will not play again this season with Al-Hilal nor will he be able to go to the Copa America with Brazil in June.
