Barcelona are far from being that great team that shone under Pep Guardiola between 2008 and 2012, with stars like Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta. That era is now in the past, and the present is much less successful. The serious financial problems that the club has had for years have negatively affected the level of the team, as many important players had to leave and those who came in to replace them have not lived up to expectations.

Barcelona lost vs Athletic in the Copa del Rey and Xavi could be on his way out

The 2022/23 La Liga title had given fans hope that they could become a great team again, but that seems difficult now. This season things have not gone well for them, with unexpected defeats and disappointing performances that have left them far off target.

In La Liga, Los Blaugranas lost key matches against Real Madrid and Girona, so they are now far from the top of the standings and it seems almost impossible for them to compete for the title. And in the Copa del Rey they were eliminated by Athletic Bilbao in the quarterfinals at San Mames. That leaves them with only one chance to win titles this season: the Champions League. There they will face Napoli in the round of 16, but given the level they have shown lately, it does not seem possible that they can compete with other European giants for the title.

If things do not improve soon, Barcelona run the risk of being left out of the next Spanish Super Cup. The four best teams of each season participate in the Super Cup, taking into account the standings of La Liga and the final stages of the Copa de Rey. The latter is no longer a possibility for them, as they did not even reach the semifinals. That is why their last hope is to finish as high as possible in the Spanish league.

Barcelona lost $300 million: players who left for free and are worth a fortune

They are not the only ones in trouble

For years the Super Cup has been played in Saudi Arabia. The Asian country pays a fortune for Spain's best teams to play the tournament there, but that money depends on who the participating clubs are. Should Real Madrid or Barcelona fail to qualify, the Spanish Federation could lose more than $5 million.
