Over the past two decades, Cristiano Ronaldo has had many teammates over the years when he played for Sporting CP, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and Al Nassr. The Portuguese icon has had a great bond with certain players throughout his career, one of them being Patrice Evra. The former Manchester United left-back was a great admirer of his teammate Ronaldo, and the two have a great friendship after spending successful years in England. Although the French defender is great friends with Ronaldo, he made some comments that could annoy the Portuguese star, who has been questioned by many neutral fans for playing at the EUROS for Portugal at 39 years old. Evra says that Portugal does not need the Al Nassr striker and talks about the 2016 EUROS final. Evra said, "In the Euro final in 2016, we(France) lost that game because Cristiano Ronaldo went off injured. Portugal played better after he went off, and we didn’t expect that." Portugal went on to win that game 1-0 thanks to a goal from Eder in extra time.

Evra was not done with the bold statements as he was asked what the difference is between Ronaldo and Messi in the present. Evra said, "Ronaldo is playing for his legacy, for his name, but Messi is just playing for fun. Messi has won everything. When you watch Messi play, he is not same as before. He is more relaxed now."

He has defended Ronaldo in the past when comparing him to Messi as he said that the Portuguese striker's work rate is what puts him ahead of Messi in his opinion. Evra said last year, "If Messi had the same work ethic as Cristiano Ronaldo, he would have 15 Ballon d'Ors. I'm in love with people who work hard, and that's why I put Cristiano Ronaldo above Leo Messi."
