For years Barcelona have had serious financial problems as a consequence of bad decisions of the previous chiefs. They spent a lot of money on signing players who then did not give the desired results and left shortly after, causing huge losses and affecting the level of the team.

Some examples are Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembélé, who arrived in 2017 to replace Neymar Junior in exchange for a fortune. The Brazilian midfielder was one of Liverpool's stars and cost $145 million, while the French winger arrived from Borussia Dortmund for $140 million. But neither lived up to expectations and their experience in Spain was a failure, with Coutinho leaving for Aston Villa for just over $20 million and Dembélé going to Paris Saint-Germain for $37 million.

Such wrong decisions meant that the club had no money to buy top players, nor to keep others who were already in the squad, such as Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez. The result was a decline in the level of the team, making it impossible for Los Blaugranas to compete with other European giants in the Champions League, such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Manchester City.

And while things have improved since the arrival of president Joan Laporta, the situation is far from being solved. In fact, in the last transfer windows they signed many players on loan (such as Joao Felix and Joao Cancelo) and others as free agents (such as Oriol Romeu and Ilkay Gundogan). Therefore, to avoid financial fair-play problems for next season, Barcelona are now obliged to sell some players in the summer transfer window.

Who can leave?

According to Marca, Barcelona chiefs have no intention of letting go of the club's young players, such as Pedri, Gavi, Ronald Araujo, Lamine Yamal, Fermin Lopez, Pau Cubarsi, Ferran Torres and Alejandro Balde. And neither do stars like Robert Lewandowski, Marc-André Ter Stegen and Ilkay Gundogan. That leaves few alternatives, so there are three transfer targets: Jules Koundé, Andreas Christensen and Raphinha.
