Bad news in Premier League, Messi's favorite defender will be out for a long time

The Premier League has been considered by many as the best league in the world for years. The competitiveness between teams, the pace of play, the number of goals per game, the unpredictability of results and the number of clubs that have a real chance of being champions are some of the factors that make it one of the most interesting tournaments in soccer.

But also the quality of the players. In all the teams there are top level stars that week after week surprise the fans with their performances. Players like Liverpool's Mohamed Salah, Manchester City's Erling Haaland, Arsenal's Bukayo Saka and Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes are some of them. However, a few months ago Lionel Messi surprised everyone by highlighting a Tottenham player, whom he chose as the "best defender in the world".

He is Cristian Romero. The centre-back is Leo's teammate in the Argentina National Team and was a key player in the Copa America, Finalissima and World Cup titles. Those performances allowed him to move to the Premier League from Atalanta for over $50 million and he quickly became a star.

With Spurs he has played more than 80 games and this season he has been very important for the team. In fact, when he has been absent (mostly due to suspension after the red card against Chelsea), the team's performances and results have been disappointing. And now he will again be absent for a long time.

What happened to him?

Last Saturday 'Cuti' had to be replaced by Eric Dier during the first half of the game vs Everton and this week coach Ange Postecoglou explained what happened: "It's not so great with Romero. He had a scan the other day. He's got a hamstring strain. So we're looking at probably four weeks, five weeks for him." This comes on top of a similar injury to fellow centre-back Micky Van De Ven, who will not be able to return until mid-January.
