Real Madrid got their fifth win in a row in the 2023/24 La Liga season, overtook Barcelona who had beaten Real Betis 5-0 yesterday and remain the only leaders of the standings with an ideal score. This time they beat Real Sociedad 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, in a match that had been difficult from the start.
Five minutes into the first half, Takefusa Kubo set up Ander Barrenetxea, who shot twice inside the box. The first time, keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga stopped the ball, but he was unable to do so the second time and the visitors scored the opener. Then they came close to doubling the lead, when Kubo again assisted Merino, who headed the ball past Kepa.
But in the second half things changed. In the first minute, Rodrygo gave a pass to Fran García, the left-back sent a drilled cross and Federico Valverde shot from the box line, sending the ball crashing into goalkeeper Alejandro Remiro's right post and into the net.
And just 15 minutes later, Los Merengues grabbed the winner: once again, the key was in the hands of Fran García, who dribbled past a rival player and sent a beautiful floated cross that found Joselu inside the area. The striker, far from Real Sociedad's defenders, had time and comfort to jump and score the second goal.
With the 2-1 win against Real Sociedad, Real Madrid regained the lead in the standings. Their next La Liga match will be a special one: on Sunday, September 24, they will play the derby against Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano stadium. But before that, on Wednesday, September 20, they will make their debut in the Champions League 2023/24. They will play at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium against Union Berlin.
