Manchester United knew that their chances of advancing in the Champions League were minimal. Three defeats in their first five games left them in a very difficult situation in the tournament, as they were last in Group A and needed a combination of their own and other teams' results.

They had no choice but to beat Bayern Munich, the group leaders and one of the favorites to win the title, at Old Trafford and hope for a draw between Copenhagen and Galatasaray in Denmark. But neither happened. Copenhagen beat their rivals at home and secured second place in Group A, leaving the Red Devils with no chance.

With that scenario, the only thing the English side could hope for was to get a win that would allow them to overtake Galatasaray, take third place in the standings and qualify for the UEFA Europa League. But they could not even do that.

Bayern Munich proved throughout the match to be a better team than Manchester United. During the first half, the effort of the hosts made things quite even and there were no goals, although it was clear that the visitors were the ones who were closer to the opener. And that came true after the break: 25 minutes into the second half, Harry Kane provided a great assist to Kingsley Coman, who took his time inside the box and scored a beautiful goal with his right foot.

What next?

The Champions League elimination is the second one for Manchester United this season. They had already been swept aside by Newcastle in the Carabao Cup round of 16. Now they have only two objectives left: the Premier League (where they are far behind leaders Liverpool) and the FA Cup.
