Real Madrid are getting what they went looking for in Portugal. Coach Carlo Ancelotti had assured in Monday's press conference that his team were 100% focused on the Champions League match against Sporting Braga and not on the 'Clasico' against Barcelona next Saturday in La Liga. And it seems he was right.

The Spanish side know that if they get a win at the Estadio Municipal de Braga they will be one step closer to qualifying for the round of 16 of Europe's most important tournament. For now they are the only leaders of group C, as they won all the matches they played.

And this Tuesday they are also getting the victory in Portugal. From the beginning of the match they showed the ambition to attack despite being visitors and quickly scored the opener. Sixteen minutes into the first half Vinicius Junior received a long pass, controlled the ball and dribbled past an opposing defender at full speed. He then entered the box and sent a drilled cross that Rodrygo Goes connected with his right boot, throwing himself to the ground and making it impossible for goalkeeper Matheus to react.

With the victory, Real Madrid are getting 9 points and are leaders of group C. In second place are Napoli (who are drawing 0-0 against Union Berlin in Germany), with 4 points. Further back are Sporting Braga with 3 points, for now in the UEFA Europa League qualification zone. And the last ones are Union Berlin, for now with one point.

The curse is over

With the goal he scored in the first half of the match against Sporting Braga, Rodrygo Goes was able to end a bad streak of almost three months. So far he had scored only one goal in the 2023/24 season with Real Madrid: it had been in the first La Liga match on August 12 against Athletic Bilbao at Nuevo San Mames.
