For a decade, Paris Saint-Germain's obsession has been the Champions League. They already dominate Ligue 1 and hardly any other team can compete with them for the title, but in Europe the level of competition is much higher and so far they have not been able to celebrate. They came close in 2020, when they lost the final against Bayern Munich, but in recent years they failed.

Not even when Nasser Al-Khelaifi put together Kylian Mbappé, Lionel Messi and Neymar PSG could not win the Champions League. In the two years when they were teammates, the French side were eliminated in the round of 16, against Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. And in both cases the main responsible was Gianluigi Donnarumma, with absurd mistakes that ended in goals for the opposing teams.

This Tuesday the Italian goalkeeper failed again. In a key match against Newcastle at the Parc des Princes, 'Gigio' gave a long rebound after a shot by Miguel Almiron and allowed Alexander Isak to score the opener.

This complicates PSG's plans. If they lose this match against The Magpies, they will be in third or fourth place in Group E and will need a win against leaders Borussia Dortmund in Germany to qualify. And even then it might not be enough, depending on what happens to the other teams in the group in their respective matches.

The curse of 'Kiki

Despite being one of the best players in the world for years, Kylian Mbappé could never win the Champions League. He has tried many times and has led the team with excellent performances, but barely once could he reach the final. This may be his last chance to do so with PSG, as his contract will expire at the end of the season.
