Paris Saint-Germain were unlucky in the draw for the group stage of the Champions League 2023/24 and were drawn in the most difficult group of all: F. There they compete with AC Milan, Newcastle and Borussia Dortmund. The latter, the last runners-up in the Bundesliga, were their opponents in their debut in the tournament, at the Parc des Princes.

The difficulty of the group means that every match is key to qualifying for the round of 16. Therefore, it was very important for Luis Enrique's team to start their journey in the tournament with a victory. And they deservedly got it.

During the first 45 minutes, PSG were superior to their rivals and controlled the ball and the field. But they lacked accuracy in front of goal to score goals. Vitinha had one of the most dangerous chances, when he shot inside the box and the ball hit the right post.

However, things changed in the second half. After 3 minutes, referee Jesús Gil Manzano awarded a penalty to the French for a handball by Niklas Sule inside the box. Kylian Mbappé took the kick and netted the opener from the spot. And 10 minutes later Vitinha and Achraf Hakimi built a beautiful play with several passes inside the box, until the Moroccan right-back dribbled past an opposing defender and scored the second goal.

They needed to win

PSG had had a difficult week after the defeat against Nice last Friday. That's why they needed to show a good performance in their Champions League debut and get a win against Borussia Dortmund to get their Group F campaign off to a good start. Their next match in Ligue 1 will be on Sunday against Olympique Marseille at the Parc des Princes. And for the Champions League, they will play on Wednesday, October 4 against Newcastle in England.
