Manchester City had no need to secure any result on Wednesday against Red Star Belgrade. They had already secured their place in the last 16 of the Champions League several weeks ago, and had even secured the leadership of group G. That would allow them to face an opponent who had finished second in another group, so the difficulty was supposed to be less.

But the Citizens did have a special motivation to win: their eighth consecutive Champions League victory, an impressive record that proves they are one of the best teams in Europe right now. They were champions of the last edition, winning back-to-back second leg semifinals against Real Madrid and the final against Inter. And this season they had won the first five matches they played in group G.

They achieved that goal too. In Serbia they won 3-2, which allowed them to finish their participation in the first phase of the European tournament in perfect fashion. The opener was scored by Micah Hamilton after 19 minutes of the first half, with a strong right-footed shot that made it impossible for goalkeeper Glazer to react.

In the second half came the best. In the 17th minute Oscar Bobb received a pass from Rico Lewis, advanced several yards with the ball, dribbled past some opposing defenders and inside the box shot with his left foot, in one of the most beautiful goals of the week. Then the hosts reacted through Hwang In-Beom, but moments later Kalvin Phillips, from the spot, netted the visitors' third. Finally, Aleksandar Katai scored again for Red Star Belgrade, who tried their best to equalize but failed to do so.

What's next?

With the win in Serbia, Manchester City took all 18 possible points in Group G and advanced to the Champions League round of 16 as one of the favorites to win the title. Now they will have a couple of months to focus on the Premier League, where they will try to regain the lead in the standings. Next Saturday they will face at Etihad Stadium.
