The France national team put on a great show in their last home game in 2023. On the penultimate matchday of Group B of the Euro 2024 qualifiers, the world runners-up took on Gibraltar in Nice and got an incredible 14-0 victory.

Things started perfectly for them, as after 6 minutes they were already leading 2-0 thanks to an own goal by Ethan Santos and another by Marcus Thuram. Then Warren Zaire-Emery went off injured moments after scoring the third, in a play that led to Santos' red card. And before the end of the first half Didier Deschamps' team scored 4 more goals, through Kylian Mbappé (from the penalty spot), Jonathan Clauss, Kingsley Coman and Youssouf Fofana.

After the break, things did not change and France continued to score goals and show their superiority over their opponents. André Rabiot, Kingsley Coman, Ousmane Dembélé, twice Olivier Giroud and twice Mbappé were the protagonists.

They now have just one game left in 2023: they will visit Greece in Athens next Tuesday. However, none of the teams will be competing to fulfill objectives anymore. The French have already qualified for Euro 2024 and the Greeks have no chance of doing so.

What happened to Mbappé?

'Kiki' scored a hat-trick and took home the match ball as a prize, but he also has another reason to celebrate. Although Olivier Giroud scored two goals during the few minutes he was on the pitch, he could have scored one more: after 80 minutes, the AC Milan striker netted, but the referee disallowed the goal with the help of the VAR. This, paradoxically, helped Mbappé. This is because the PSG player is aiming to become the top scorer in the history of the French national team and Giroud is precisely the one who holds that place right now, with 56 goals. Now Kylian has gotten closer and is third with 45.
