Barcelona got off to an ideal start in the first 'Clasico' of the season. Xavi Hernandez's team knew they needed to have a perfect performance in order to overcome Real Madrid. Their opponents have top-level players and have proven their quality in this season's matches. Therefore, in addition to doing what they usually do in other games of the season, they needed to add even more effort and concentration.
The Catalan coach surprised everyone with an unexpected decision for this game: he chose Joao Cancelo as a right-winger and not as a full-back, the position he usually plays. Xavi wanted to take advantage of the Portuguese player's talent for dribbling past opponents, while freeing him from defensive responsibilities. At the same time, he decided that Ronald Araujo would be in charge of marking Vinicius Junior.
And these changes paid off quickly, as in the first minutes of the match the hosts dominated their opponents and scored the opener. After 6 minutes, Ilkay Gundogan received the ball near the box after a pass from Ferrán Torres. There he tried to assist a teammate, but there was a rebound from a Real Madrid player and, with his opponents hesitating, he got into the box, disputed the ball with Alaba and was face to face with goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. At that moment he was calm enough to shoot smoothly with his right foot and score.
Then Fermin Lopez came close to scoring Barcelona's second goal, with a shot that hit the post as Real Madrid players claimed offside to referee Gil Manzano.
Carlo Ancelotti is not satisfied with his team's performance in the opening minutes at Montjuic. The stars of the squad, such as Vinicius, Rodrygo and Jude Bellingham, have not had much participation yet.
