Liverpool went into the break with a 1-0 lead over Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in their second UEFA Europa League 2023/24 Group E match. This result puts them at the top of the standings with 6 points, 2 ahead of Toulouse FC, who in France are beating LASK 1-0.

Things were not easy for The Reds. In the first minutes they controlled the ball and the field and forced the Belgian team to retreat and take refuge near their box. With that scenario, Darwin Nunez had two chances to score: the first one after a drilled cross from Mohamed Salah that ended with an inaccurate shot; the second one with a strong left foot shot that the goalkeeper saved.

However, as the minutes went by Royale Union Saint-Gilloise found more defensive solidity and were able to play a few yards further up the field. They even had a chance to score, with Christian Burgess' header going over the crossbar.

But in the last moments Liverpool netted the opener. On 44 minutes, referee Morten Krogh called a foul for the hosts in their own box. Alisson gave a quick pass to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who ran several yards with the ball and passed it to Diogo Jota. The Portuguese striker played it back to him and Alexander-Arnold shot from outside the box. Goalkeeper Anthony Moris saved, but he couldn't keep the ball and Ryan Gravenberch took advantage to score the goal.

What will the coach do?

With the lead, things are likely to be easier for Liverpool now. That's why manager Jurgen Klopp may decide to make changes during the second half to rest some of the team's players, considering that next Sunday they will play against Brighton & Hove Albion in an important Premier League match.
