Liverpool needed a win against Royale Union Saint-Gilloise to remain the sole leaders of the UEFA Europa League Group E standings. They had beaten LASK of Austria in the opener and on Thursday they celebrated at Anfield Road against the Belgian team. It was 2-0 thanks to goals from Ryan Gravenberch and Diogo Jota.

The opener came in the last minute of the first half, when Trent Alexander-Arnold shot from outside the box and goalkeeper Anthony Moris saved it, but could not prevent the rebound from being caught by Gravenberch, who only had to push the ball in gently to score.

In the second half, coach Jurgen Klopp introduced changes to rest some of the team's players, and Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones, Alexis MacAllister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Luis Diaz came on. The latter had one of the most dangerous chances, with a shot that hit the post.

In the last minutes, the visitors took control of the ball, trying to score the equaliser. The Reds dropped back and defended well, taking advantage of the spaces left by their rivals. That's how the second goal arrived, when defender Noah Sadiki stole the ball from Luis Diaz, but could not prevent Diogo Jota, who entered the box and shot with his left foot, from receiving it. With these 3 points, Liverpool are top of Group E and are 2 points ahead of Toulouse FC, who beat LASK 1-0 in France.
