On Wednesday afternoon Manchester City and Sevilla will play the UEFA Super Cup at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium in Athens, Greece. The tournament brings together the winners of the most important titles in Europe in the last season: The Citizens won the Champions League after defeating Inter 1-0, while the Spanish side beat AS Roma on penalties to become UEFA Europa League champions.

This match will be Manchester City's second chance to win a tournament in the 2023/24 season. A little over a week ago, they lost the Community Shield against Arsenal and now they have the chance to bounce back. But it won't be easy, as Sevilla have proven to be a difficult opponent with experience in this kind of matches.

Moreover, Pep Guardiola will have problems to decide the starting line-up, as he will not be able to use 4 players from the squad. Kevin De Bruyne is the most important absence. The Belgian midfielder suffered a serious injury in Friday's match against Burnley and will have to undergo surgery, so he will be out for 3 to 4 months.

Joao Cancelo, Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva join him. The Portuguese players are not in the call-up list and this generated the surprise of many. Cancelo is close to agreeing his arrival to Barcelona, so it is logical that he will not be in Greece. Silva is one of the stars of the team and played on Friday against Burnley, although he has also been targeted by the Catalan side.

Will it be Gvardiol's chance?

With the absence of Ruben Dias, Guardiola will have to choose another center-back to replace him. Although he has several options in that position, such as John Stones, Manuel Akanji, Aymeric Laporte and Nathan Ake, the favorite is Josko Gvardiol. The Croatian defender joined the club last week in exchange for $100 million and against Sevilla could get his first game in the starting lineup.
