Lionel Messi's 2023 season ended a long time ago. His last official matches were with the Argentina National Team in the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, when the world champions faced Uruguay and Brazil during the international break. And with Inter Miami he had finished even earlier, in October, when they failed to qualify for the Major League Soccer Eastern Conference playoffs.

Since then Leo has been on vacation, and will be until the second week of January, when he should join the preseason training with The Herons. Never in his 19-year professional career has he had so much time off and that is why he is making the most of it. For a few weeks he rested with his wife Antonela Roccuzzo and his sons Thiago, Mateo and Ciro in Miami, but a week ago he flew with them to Argentina to join the rest of his family and friends.

They are in the town of Funes, a small town of 23,000 inhabitants located just a few minutes from Rosario, Messi's hometown and where he lived until the age of 13, when he moved to Spain to start a treatment that helped him grow up, at the same time he started playing in Barcelona's youth teams.

In Funes the Argentine star has a luxurious mansion with 25 rooms, a huge garden, a swimming pool with dimensions similar to those used in the Olympic Games and a huge parking lot where at least 15 cars can fit. It also has a private cinema where the family enjoys movies and TV series. Other sports stars live in the same neighborhood, such as former Argentine National Team and Inter player Cristian 'Kily' Gonzalez and former tennis player (number 3 in the ATP ranking) Guillermo Coria.

He needs rest

Lionel Messi will have a very demanding 2024. With Inter Miami he will compete in three tournaments: Major League Soccer, the Leagues Cup and the CONCACAF Champions League. The latter will be the main objective, since if they win the title they will secure their place in the 2025 Club World Cup. And he will also play the Copa America in the United States, perhaps his last tournament with the Argentine National Team.
