This Wednesday Barcelona achieved an important victory against Porto 1-0 at the Estadio Do Bragao thanks to Ferran Torres' goal. This allowed them to become the sole leaders of group H of the Champions League. They now have 6 points, 3 more than the Portuguese side and Shakhtar Donets; while the last ones are Royal Antwerp, who lost both matches they played.
However, Los Blaugranas received terrible news: Robert Lewandowski suffered a sprained ankle and will not be able to play for several weeks. This means he will miss Sunday's La Liga match against Granada. In addition, he will not be able to join the Poland national team for the matches against the Faroe Islands and Moldova in the Euro 2024 qualifiers.
And that's not all, as it will be difficult for him to return in time to face Athletic Bilbao on Sunday, October 22, and Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League, three days later. Los Culés' hope is that he will be able to play against Real Madrid on October 28, although no one can say for now.
Given this scenario, Xavi Hernandez will have to look for alternatives to replace him. There are no center-forwards with similar characteristics to Lewandowski in the squad. That is why, when the Polish striker has not been able to play, the coach chose Ferrán Torres. The Spanish player can occupy that position, and in fact playing there he scored the winning goal against Porto, but it is not a natural role for him. His position is winger or second forward.
Another alternative for Xavi Hernandez is to give opportunities to some of the club's young players. Angel Alarcon is the ideal forward to replace Lewandowski, but he is returning from a serious injury and has only played two games. Another option is Marc Guiu, a striker of great height and physical strength who stands out in Barcelona's youth team.
