Joao Felix arrived at Barcelona on deadline day this summer. Xavi Hernandez needed a forward to replace Ousmane Dembélé, who had surprisingly activated the exit clause to leave for Paris Saint-Germain, and the Portuguese forward appeared as an ideal option for several reasons: his talent, obviously, his desire to play on the Catalan side and his conflict with coach Diego Simeone.
However, many had doubts about Joao's performance. His last season had been very poor, with 6 months at Atletico Madrid in which he did not have a place in the team and 6 months on loan at Chelsea, showing a disappointing level. But the player quickly proved that he came to Catalunya to make a difference and in his first few games he has been key for the team.
So now Los Blaugranas are starting to think about a plan to keep him after June 30, 2024, when his loan expires. According to newspaper Sport, Atlético Madrid informed Barcelona that the price they are seeking for Joao Felix is $85 million. But their serious financial problems make it impossible to pay that amount.
Given this scenario, they may be able to negotiate other alternatives. One of them would be to divide that money in three payments of almost $30 million, although it would still be difficult for Barcelona to afford. Another option, the one that most satisfies Joan Laporta's club, is to extend the loan for one more year including a purchase clause for June 2025, with a value of less than $85 million.
Although Barcelona and Atlético Madrid are beginning talks on this issue, Joao Felix is focused on maintaining his good level on the field. This Tuesday he will play for Portugal against Bosnia Herzegovina in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, while next Sunday he will return to Barcelona to face Athletic Bilbao.
