For decades, Europe's top teams have been looking to South America, especially Argentina and Brazil, for talented young players who promise to become big stars in the future. Barcelona, for example, acquired Lionel Messi, Real Madrid Vinicius Junior and Manchester City Julián Álvarez.
This summer, a young Argentine defender caught the attention of several important clubs in Italy and England. He is Valentin Barco, a Boca Juniors defender, who at just 19 years of age has earned a place in the team thanks to his talent, winning mentality and versatility. Although his natural position is left-back, he has also played as a wide midfielder and winger, which makes him an interesting player for any coach.
According to The Sun, Manchester City are willing to pay almost $12 million to sign him, but they are not the only ones. Brighton & Hove Albion are also interested in the defender and have made an offer to the Argentine club, but it was rejected as insufficient.
And outside England, Valentin Barco's qualities have also attracted attention. Juventus have targeted him and in the next few days could start talks to sign him. The Vecchia Signora have already made similar purchases in recent years, such as Matias Soulé of Velez Sarsfield and Enzo Barrenechea of Newell's Old Boys.
Juan Román Riquelme, former Boca Juniors star and current vice-president of the club, recently spoke about Valentín Barco and said: “He is a cheeky kid. We are here to accompany and take care of the boys. For them it is a dream to be training every day with players like Benedetto, Marcos Rojo, Edinson Cavani and Sergio Romero. They have to learn from the greatest because it will help them a lot. Barco is a technically very good player and we are very happy to have him with us.”
