Manchester United had a terrible performance in the Champions League 2023/24. They were in group A with Bayern Munich, Galatasaray and Copenhagen, and their goal was supposed to be to compete with the Germans for the leadership of the standings. But none of that happened. The level they showed in their six matches was disappointing, and the results were far from what was expected.

They only managed one win, against Copenhagen at Old Trafford 1-0, the day Andre Onana became a hero by saving a last-minute penalty. Their other point came in Turkey, when they drew 3-3. The rest of the matches were defeats. Thus, with only 4 points out of a possible 18, they finished in last place in the group and not only failed to advance to the round of 16 in the Champions League, but they did not even get a place in the UEFA Europa League.

This failure is explained by these statistics. In fact, this year's performance was the club's worst ever in the European competition. They had never lost so many matches and won so few in the group stage. And it is not the only negative record. The Red Devils conceded 15 goals in 6 matches. Never had an English team been so vulnerable in the Champions League group stage.

The elimination from international tournaments left Manchester United with only two objectives until the end of the season. One is the Premier League, where they are in sixth place with 27 points, 10 behind leaders Liverpool. The other is the FA Cup, which has not yet started for England's top teams.

What did the coach say?

Erik Ten Hag gave an interview to TNT Sports after Tuesday's defeat against Bayern Munich and explained: "We didn't lose it today, that's clear. We had a good performance but also we made mistakes. Individual mistakes. In the end it was not good enough".
