The last matches of the Champions League group stage were played on Tuesday and Wednesday. The 16 teams that advanced to the round of 16, where they will face each other in February in home and away matches, were defined. Also confirmed were the 8 teams that, as third in each group, will play in the UEFA Europa League. And finally, the teams that were eliminated from all international tournaments this season, such as Manchester United and Newcastle.

The 16 teams that will compete for the Champions League title are divided into two: those that won their respective groups and, therefore, will have priority in the next phase, and those that finished second. The first are Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Atlético Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City and Barcelona. The runners-up are Copenhagen, PSV Eindhoven, Napoli, Inter, Lazio, Paris Saint-Germain, RB Leipzig and Porto.

As they wait for the draw for the round of 16, the clubs are calculating how much money they will receive for having been successful in the first round of the tournament. UEFA pays teams prizes for participating in the group stage (€15,250,000, or more than $16.7 million) for each win (nearly $3 million) or draw (nearly $1 million) and for advancing to the next round ($10.4 million).

The teams that will receive the most money are those that won all six matches they played: Real Madrid and Manchester City. Both have already accumulated almost $45 million in prize money, an amount that will increase depending on their performance in the next phases of the tournament. Bayern Munich will receive $42.7 million, while Paris Saint-Germain, with two wins, two draws and two defeats in the group stage, accumulated $35 million.

What's next?

Next Monday, the draw for the Champions League round of 16 will take place. There will be two groups of clubs: those that finished as leaders of their respective zones and those that finished second. The clashes in the next phase will be between clubs from one group and the other.
