One of Carlo Ancelotti's strongest decisions this season 2023/24 at Real Madrid was to remove Luka Modric from the team. The midfielder was one of the great stars of the Spanish side during the last 10 years and was key in the 5 Champions League titles they have won since then.
However, he is now 37 years old (he will be 38 on September 9) and the coach decided that his new team needs younger players in the midfield. That is why both Modric and Toni Kroos started the season on the bench and the team included Federico Valverde, Aurélien Tchuaméni, Eduardo Camavinga and Jude Bellingham. In fact, in 3 of the 4 matches he was a substitute and was only in the starting lineup last weekend against Getafe.
The Croatian player gave an interview to Sportske Novosti and talked about this situation: "Nobody is happy when they don't play. After my whole career, that feeling is especially strange for me. But well, the coach decided for his own reasons. I won't sink or weaken because of that. On the contrary”.
He also spoke about the conversations he had with the club's chiefs before agreeing to renew his contract: "They wanted me to stay and I had the same desire. My only condition for staying was that they would treat me as a competitive player, and not keep me in the squad based on past merit. They told me that nothing would change in my status, and that's why I signed."
Modric was asked if he considers leaving Real Madrid if he has little chance of playing and said: "We will see how things develop, if in the future it turns out that I am no longer important, then I would think about what to do. Other interests came to me, but my goal has always been Real Madrid".
