Renowned French forward Kylian Mbappé signed a contract extension with PSG in May 2022, prolonging his commitment to the club until 2025. However, this renewal included a small condition, the option to extend the contract from 2024 to 2025 would be exclusively in Mbappé's hands, unilaterally, and he could only activate it before July 31, 2023.
According to L'Equipe, the French striker has informed Paris Saint-Germain that he will not exercise the option to extend his contract for an additional year. This means he will fulfill the remaining season and then leave as a free agent.
The possibility of Mbappé not renewing his contract has been looming for months. The talented player felt disappointed by all the unfulfilled promises made to him by Al-Khelaïfi in May 2022. The current scenario, as indicated by L'Équipe, is radically different from that of August 2021.
This situation puts PSG in a difficult position as they now have to make a tough decision, keep Mbappé until June 2024 and let him leave without any financial compensation or sell him in this transfer window to obtain a substantial sum of money.
Due to the player's desire not to renew, those in Paris are aware that they cannot allow him to leave without receiving anything in return. With positions diverging between both parties, it is likely that the forward will leave the club this summer for a figure that would range from 180-200 million EUR.
