This Wednesday Manchester City played a key game against Aston Villa at Villa Park. Both teams were in the top places in the standings and were aiming to get a win to get closer to the leaders Arsenal. In the end it was the hosts who wanted to succeed, as they won 1-0 thanks to Leon Bailey's goal.
With that victory, The Villans overtook The Citizens in the standings and are now in third place with 32 points, 4 points behind Arsenal and 2 points behind Liverpool. Manchester City are one place below, with 30 points. Although they are still in the Champions League 2024/25 qualification zone, their place could be at risk if Tottenham beat West Ham United on Thursday.
However, this is not the only bad news for Pep Guardiola's side. The defeat at Villa Park also had another consequence: they ended a positive streak of more than six years. The Citizens have now gone four consecutive games without a win in the Premier League, after draws against Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham, and the defeat against Aston Villa.
The last time something like this had happened was in the 2016/17 season, Guardiola's first as manager of the team and the worst so far. At that time, his team finished third in the English league, behind Chelsea and Tottenham.
Pep gave a press conference after Wednesday's game and acknowledged that things are not turning out as he had hoped: "I know the players tried and wanted it because they have proven it to me and everyone many times. But now the results are not good, when previously they always were. The way we played in the past let us win, but today, we are not able to. We are not consistent enough to win games. I have to think about it. I have to sleep, to reflect."
