During the last international break, Gavi suffered a serious knee injury playing with the Spanish National Team. The results of the medical studies were negative: he suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligaments and meniscus, so he will have to undergo surgery and will be out of the field for six to eight months.
This caused an unexpected problem for Xavi Hernández, who considered the midfielder a key member of the team. But it also gave him a chance. FIFA rules state that in cases like this, in which a player is injured during an international match, the club receives money as compensation. And La Liga also allows the injured club to sign a player for 80% of the value of the injured player, regardless of the limitations of financial fair play.
With this scenario, Marca newspaper reports that Barcelona have made a final decision on what to do. Next week they will communicate to La Liga that they will make use of that option and sign a player during the January transfer window.
Now the question is who the chosen player will be. Different options have been mentioned in recent days. If Xavi's intention is to replace Gavi, the most logical alternatives are midfielders like Giovani Lo Celso and Isco Alarcón. But Los Blaugranas also need a striker, since the only player in the squad with those characteristics is Robert Lewandowski.
After Saturday's match against Rayo Vallecano, sporting director Deco was consulted on this issue and said: "Xavi and I are coordinated with regard to the market. We are not going to replace Gavi because there is no other player like him on the market, much less in January. We will see what position we reinforce. We will probably opt for Vitor Roque, but nothing has been decided".
