Paris Saint-Germain suffered a tough defeat last Tuesday in Italy. There they lost 2-1 against AC Milan and remained in a complicated situation in Champions League Group E. They are now in second place. They are now in second place in the standings and, although that will be enough to advance to the round of 16, the Italian side and Newcastle are too close to them and could steal that place.
The defeat at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium brought back the criticism. When, at the beginning of the season, PSG did not show good performances and did not get the expected results, the coach and some players like Kylian Mbappé were targeted by the French press as the responsible. When things started to improve, those criticisms turned into praise. Now, however, that has changed again.
This Friday Luis Enrique gave a press conference in which he was asked about his decisions in the last game, but he stood firm and said: "We are a team that does not speculate on any field. We have not speculated, so far, against any rival. We always go out to win. We try to be better than our opponents. I am not going to change. Whatever the opponent, we go out to win and to attack. I don't know if it's the best thing to do, but it's my idea and I'm not going to change".
He then took aim at journalists: "The same midfielders who played against AC Milan at the Parc des Princes, and we won 3-0, nobody asks me if they are young or not. We lose 2-1 at San Siro, in a match that could have gone either way, and they are still the same midfielders," he explained, impying that the criticism is not consistent.
Luis Enrique also referred to the level of the opponents they have faced: "In the Champions League we are in the most difficult group of the competition, one of the only really interesting ones. Until the last matchday, we have the possibility of finishing first, second, third and even fourth. It's like being in the round of 16, quarterfinals or even semifinals. I'm convinced that we'll qualify, but it's clear that there are risks involved".
