Luka Modric is facing difficulties in fulfilling his desire to end his sporting career wearing the Real Madrid shirt. The current circumstances are working against him, and the Croatian player finds himself in an uncertain situation just ten days away from the expiration of his contract with the white club.
Modric is facing two problems that distance him from Real Madrid. On one hand, he wishes to represent the Croatian National Team in the qualifying matches for the Euro 2024, whose final phase will take place in Germany. Modric's intention is to bid farewell to active football in that tournament.
However, Real Madrid has informed him that they cannot renew a 38-year-old player for one more year, especially considering his intention to combine his commitment to the white club with international duties. Given his circumstances, Real Madrid does not consider his continuity feasible and believes that his contribution to the team would be limited if he continues playing for Croatia.
On the other hand, Carlo Ancelotti has been honest with him and has clearly explained the role that awaits him at Real Madrid next season, which is to be a substitute for Bellingham. While Ancelotti recognizes the qualities Modric possesses, his role would be limited to occasional appearances, while in important matches, where the starters feel like starters, it will be Bellingham who takes the spotlight.
With these two obstacles in his path, Modric must make a decision within hours about whether he wants to continue at Real Madrid. The sacrifice being asked of him is considerable: to give up his national team and accept his situation as a bench player.
