Real Madrid have a clear objective this Sunday: to beat Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium and become the new leaders of the La Liga standings. They depend on themselves to achieve it, as Girona will only play against Alaves on Monday. Therefore, Los Merengues know that winning will take them to the top and keep them there for at least 24 hours.

But for that they must be better than the Yellow Submarine, who also need to win to improve their situation in the standings. At the start of the 17th La Liga matchday they were in 14th place with 16 points, just 3 points behind the relegation zone, where for now there are Celta, Granada and Almeria.

So far Carlo Ancelotti's team are fulfilling the objective, as during the first half they outplayed their rivals and scored two goals that gave them tranquility to control the pace of the match. The opener came after 25 minutes, when Luka Modric sent a subtle floated cross with his right foot and assisted Jude Bellingham, who with a good header beat the resistance of goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen.

Just 12 minutes later, Rodrygo Goes doubled the lead in a confusing play inside the box, in which there were several rebounds until Lucas Vazquez gave a pass to the Brazilian forward, who only had to shoot with his right foot to score the second goal. Initially the assistant had raised the flag indicating offside, but the VAR reviewed the decision and the goal was validated.

Not all good news

Despite the goals from Bellingham and Rodrygo, and the win they are getting against Villarreal, Real Madrid have reason to be concerned. After 34 minutes David Alaba had to be replaced by Nacho due to a physical problem. The Austrian defender fell with his full body weight on his left knee and left the field in pain and unable to walk, so a serious injury is feared.
