Barcelona are having a great start to the season. In La Liga they have won 4 of the 5 games they played and are second in the standings, only 2 points behind the leaders, Real Madrid. And in the Champions League they debuted with a great 5-0 victory against Royal Antwerp in Montjuic.

One of the most outstanding players of the team in these matches was Frenkie De Jong. The Dutch midfielder has shown a very high level and Xavi considers him an essential piece in the team. In fact, this week he said about him: "Frenkie de Jong is a key player for us. I think he is in the best moment of his career. He is growing a lot. I would renew him with my eyes closed."

That last sentence is related to a situation that concerns Barcelona. For some weeks now they have been in talks with the player's agent to renew the contract that expires in 2026, but so far they have made no progress. According to reports, this is because De Jong is upset with the club's chiefs, who last summer pressured him to leave for Manchester United, as they needed money.

However, Los Blaugranas are confident that negotiations will now be successful. The reason is that the sporting director with whom he had that conflict, Mateu Alemany, is no longer there. Now Deco has been hired as his replacement and will do his best to reach an agreement. "My renewal? I'll let my agent take care of that, but I'm very happy here," the midfielder said this week.

Why do they need to do it?

While Frenkie De Jong still has three more years on his contract with Barcelona, the chiefs need to renew his contract for two reasons. The first is to ensure he stays at the club for longer, until 2028. And the other reason is because of their financial problems. Their intention is to pay the player the same amount of money he earns right now, but divided over more years, to improve the club's finances.
