This Tuesday the German National Team played a friendly match against France in Dortmund. There, the hosts won 2-1, which helped them to silence the critics for the poor performances of recent times, which caused the dismissal of coach Hansi Flick and the temporary arrival of Rudi Voller. The goals were scored by Leroy Sané and Thomas Müller, while Antoine Griezmann netted the French goal from the penalty spot.
However, the result of the match was not the most important thing of the day. Everyone watching the match was concerned about what happened to Ilkay Gündogan: after 24 minutes of the first half, the Barcelona midfielder disputed a ball in the air with André Rabiot and fell to the ground with the full weight of his body on his back.
This caused him a lot of pain and prevented him from continuing to play, so Voller had to replace him with Pascal Grob. Gündogan left with obvious signs of pain and in tears, which worried his teammates in Germany and everyone in Barcelona.
Now, on his return to Spain, the club's medical team will carry out studies to know the details of the blow and decide which are the most convenient steps to follow. In any case, according to the newspaper As, in the first conversations that the player has had with them, he reassured them that his problem is not so serious.
Gündogan's initial reaction, leaving the field in tears, has an explanation. In 2014 he suffered a serious injury to his back that prevented him from playing for more than a year. In an interview with The Guardian, the midfielder recounted the details: “I was out for 14 months but the worst part was that no one really knew what kind of injury it was. I saw a surgeon and he wanted to put a big screw in my back which would not allow me to play football at that level. So I was scared of not playing again and I'm really grateful I found the right surgeon.”
