One of the most important signings in Europe in the last transfer window was Joao Felix's move to Barcelona. The Portuguese player had no place at Atlético Madrid and Los Blaugranas needed a replacement for Ousmané Dembélé, so the parties reached an agreement for a one-year loan.
The forward's arrival proved to be a wise decision. In his first matches in the Catalan side, he has shown a much higher level than he had in his last seasons with Atlético Madrid and Chelsea. These great performances have made him a key member of Xavi Hernandez's team.
However, his salary did not match his importance. The serious financial problems that Barcelona have been facing for years made it difficult for them to spend a lot of money on signing players, so Joao Felix had to fork out a fortune to make the transfer happen. His salary was €400,000 gross per year ($422,000), making him the cheapest player on the squad.
Now, according to Catalunya Radio, the club's chiefs have decided to increase that amount to match Joao Felix's importance on the pitch. So from this month his salary will be multiplied by 10 and he will earn €4 million gross per year (about $4.2 million).
Joao Felix made his Barcelona debut on September 3 against Osasuna, when he came off the bench 34 minutes into the second half. Since then he has played 7 games, scored 4 goals and provided 2 assists. He has been more involved than imagined, especially because of the injury suffered by Pedri. The Spanish midfielder was a key player for Xavi Hernandez and, without him, the coach has had to look for other alternatives.
